Tips To Help Make Your Transition To Assisted Living Easier

by Tony Grant

As a person ages, it is a common problem for them to gradually lose the ability to care for themselves. When this happens, they may start to suffer from a rapidly dropping quality of life. Fortunately, there are assisted living facilities that can provide you with the care and attention that you need. Moving into one of these communities can be a major transition, but there are a couple of tips you can follow to help ensure that things go smoothly for you during this time.

Carefully Consider The Pet Policies

Many people have a beloved pet that they could never imagine parting with. For those suffering from mental illness or other chronic conditions, the presence of a pet can act as a form of therapy. If you have a pet that helps you cope with life, there are many assisted living communities that allow residents to keep their beloved pet.

However, the exact policies governing the presence of animals on the property will vary from community to community. As a result, you will likely need to speak with several providers before you find one that has pet policies that will suit your needs.

Have Your Primary Physician Create A Plan Of Care

Assisted living facilities are designed to care for every need a patient's comfort may require, and medical care falls under this category. However, it is impossible for an assisted living community to provide the type of care you need if there are no directions for them to follow. After all, these communities defer to your doctor's instructions, and without these, they may not be able to provide you with the care that you need.

Luckily, it is not difficult to obtain a formal plan of care from your doctor. When they create this plan, it will include any medications that need to be taken, exercises, dietary restrictions and when the patient's next appointment needs to occur. These plans can usually be completed in a few days, and many doctors will fax this report to the community on your behalf.

Assisted living communities can be an excellent way for ensuring you are receiving the care you need without sacrificing freedom. However, transitioning to this type of community is no easy task for many people, and the stresses from this transition may complicated existing medical or mental health problems. Luckily, following these two tips will help you avoid overlooking important steps to making your transition as smooth as possible.

About Me

Choosing a Top Quality Nursing Home

When you're facing putting your loved one into a nursing home or assisted living facility, you want to make the best possible choice for your loved one. That can be difficult when you don't know much about the nursing homes in your area, or about what you should be looking for in a nursing home to begin with. It's a good idea to tour as many facilities in your area as possible to get an idea of which ones you like, but you still need to know what the signs of a good or bad nursing home are. I used to work as a kitchen assistant in long term care facilities, and I learned a lot about them during that time. I started this blog to share some of my insights into what makes a nursing home great, and how to spot problems in a facility that you're considering.
